Although I managed to see a lot in a small amount of time, I can’t wait to get back and discover the less touristy places at a more leisurely pace.

This was my first international longhaul flight where I used frequent flyer points and miles to fly a premium class cabin. Surprisingly, everything for this trip came together easily and I had no issues securing award space.
My criteria for an award seat was:
- Premium Economy or above;
- Non-stop flight;
- Depart from either Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne;
- Arrive at either Los Angeles, San Francisco or even Honolulu;
- Preferably book through Alaska Airline’s Mileage Plan (where I already had miles held).
As luck would have it, Alaska Airlines showed one business class seat on the Qantas Sydney to San Francisco flight on October 19.
With that booked and arrangements made to stay with a friend in San Francisco, the countdown was on.
