It’s been a big week for Qantas, with the airline announcing that it will start a nonstop Perth to London route in 2018. Qantas is due to take possession of it’s first dreamliner in October 2017 with a second one to follow in December 2017.
With the Perth to London flight not due to fly until March 2018, I wondered if we may see the aircraft pop up on some domestic routes before running replacement routes of the 747-400’s to Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Well, Qantas announced today that the inaugural international service will take off on December 15, 2017 from Melbourne to Los Angeles.
Operating six times per week, the Dreamliner will replace the 747-400 service that currently operates on the route alongside the A380. This provides travellers with four extra return flights per week and gives the option of a morning or afternoon departure from Melbourne on most days.
United or Qantas? The battle of the Melbourne Dreamliners
US airline, United Airways currently operates a Boeing 787 dreamliner on the Melbourne to Los Angeles route. It features Business Class, Economy Plus and Economy.
So how do you choose?
|Seat Width||17.5”||16.3” – 17.3”|
|Entertainment||Yes – Seatback||Yes – Seatback|
|Wifi||No||Yes – paid|
For economy passengers, it really comes down to price and wifi. Don’t underestimate the power that wifi on a longhaul flight can have on your comfort level and ability to pass the time.
Premium Economy / Economy Plus
As Qantas are yet to confirm the new premium economy product, it is hard to compare the two. However, United runs a 3-3-3 Economy Plus product, already inferior to the 2-3-2 that Qantas will offer. United’s Economy Plus product offers an extra 3 inches in seat pitch compared to economy but not much else.
Qantas blows United out of the water with it’s Business Suite. United have installed a 2-2-2 Business configuration while Qantas will be a 1-2-1.
Virgin Australia will also restart their Melbourne to Los Angeles flight with a Boeing 777-300 in April 2017. If you don’t have to fly on a dreamliner, be sure to check them out as well.
How to book the Melbourne to Los Angeles flight
Fares for the Melbourne to Los Angeles flights will go on sale December 25, 2016.
Looking to purchase a premium economy ticket? Keep in mind that Qantas aren’t unveiling the new Premium Economy design until the first quarter of 2017. Though, I have speculated that the design may be an altered design of the Thompson Aero Cozy Suite Plus.
